Pixelfly MediaFly-300: Ideal Solution for Primary School Classroom

I visited a Swiss customer in January, who worked for a government agency in Switzerland and was responsible for the integration of AV education systems in all local primary schools. He took me to visit the AV system environment in the classrooms of a local primary school. Generally speaking, the system is quite simple. The signal source usually includes a room PC, a document camera and the teacher’s laptop, and the display devices usually include a monitor on the platform and a projector on the top of the classroom. 


                                                  



According to this environment, the customer adopted a presentation switcher in his previously designed education system to meet the switching need of signal sources, as well as added a pair of HDBaseT extender to extend the signal to the overhead projector.

However, this system solution has encountered some bottlenecks, as the devices need to be upgraded:

a. The Swiss government has increased its investment in elementary education. Children and teachers tend to use more educational tablet computers, but the current AV system cannot cast the screen of these tablet computers.

b. The current AV system is quite simple. However, if the teacher wants to switch the signal sources, he must open the cabinet under the platform to press the front panel buttons of the presentation switcher. This is very troublesome as it can easily interrupt the teaching process.

c. During the teaching process, sometimes the teacher needs to turn off the projector, but simultaneously keep the monitor screen on. For instance, when the teacher is searching for some documents on his laptop, he may think it is not convenient to show them to the students; or he wants the students to concentrate more on his lecturer. Obviously, the current AV system cannot meet his demand.

d. In some large classrooms or auditoriums, the students complain that they are too far from the platform to have a clear view of the handouts on the large screen. The school authority considers hanging several display screens from the ceiling in the middle position and hanging several screens on the side walls. However, the current AV system cannot satisfy this secondary expansion either.

After this field visit, I realized that these problems are quite common in education scenarios, not just in primary school classrooms, but also high school and even university classrooms. Therefore, based on this situation, we have customized a simple education presentation solution named MediaFly-300, which can well meet the above-mentioned requirements:



a. TRIO-WPS41, key component of MediaFly-300, is a BYOD presentation switcher. In addition to four physical HDMI ports which can connect different local sources, the switcher also provides three wireless access methods to connect different mobile devices, such as Airplay (iOS), Miracast (Andriod or Windows system). Furthermore, we have designed a more reliable HDMI/USB-C 2-in-1 dongle for laptops. It does not require installing any software, delivering real plug-n-play user experience.

b. TRIO-WPS41 provides an HDMI local output to connect the monitor on the platform. In addition, its LAN port supports mirrored IP streaming output. With our HDIP100D 4K IP decoder, point-to-point or point-to-multipoint signal extension, as well as AV distribution can be easily achieved. Because of the flexibility of IP-based solution, the display devices in the classroom can be expanded at will to meet the viewing needs from different locations. What’s more, this IP solution does not require any configuration on the Ethernet switches. It is real plug-n-play, as even end users can install it by themselves.

c. In the MediaFly-300 solution, we have also provided an embedded desktop control keypad, which is easy to operate and convenient to control for the teacher. In addition to the capability to switch between four local signal sources, the keypad can also control the power of all display devices, as well as turn on/off the wireless casting function. What’s more, there is a special function which can perfectly solve one of the problems mentioned above. The teacher can press the blank screen key to turn off all remote display devices, and only keep the monitor screen on, so that the teacher can fully control the content that the students watch.


              


In a word, with BYOD, plug-n-play, flexible AV distribution, easy control and other amazing features, MediaFly-300 enables the teacher to have a full control of his teaching content and pace, satisfies students’ needs of sharing and interaction, as well as offers the teacher capability to control the whole AV system in a simple way.

Apart from education scenario, this solution can also be applied to training classroom, corporate meeting room, sports bar, worship room, etc. For these scenarios, we have also added a video wall function so that users can form a large-screen splicing display.
